From the M62 - brings the vast majority of traffic into Liverpool from the rest of the country.

From the North of Liverpool

From the Wirral and North Wales, via the Mersey Tunnels

The Mersey Tunnels bring traffic into Liverpool from the Wirral Peninsula to the south and, beyond that, from Cheshire and North Wales. There are two tunnels with separate entrances and exits. Both are toll-controlled at the Wirral end, with the current price for single cars £1.40 for a single journey. Prices are higher for larger vehicles, such as minibuses and coaches.

From the M62

Follow the motorway to its conclusion, which is a set of traffic lights with a flyover running above the road ahead. Go through these lights, under the flyover, following the A5080 Edge Lane Drive dual carriageway towards the city centre. This seamlessly becomes the A5047 Edge Lane after a short distance.

After nearly two miles, the dual carriageway becomes single, after which you reach a crossroads, with St Cyprian’s Church on your left. Turn left onto the B5173 Durning Road.

Go through a crossroads with the B5178 Wavertree Road, then turn right at the second crossroads, onto the A562 Upper Parliament Street.

Follow this road through two crossroads, passing the Liverpool Women’s Hospital on your right. At the third junction, turn sharp left onto the B5175 Princes Road.

Princes Road is a broad single carriageway for a few hundred metres, before dividing into a tree-lined boulevard. The synagogue is on your left, on the final corner before the boulevard begins. You can park in Selborne Street, which is a turning on the left, immediately after the synagogue.

From the North of Liverpool

There are a number of roads leading into Liverpool from the north, such as the A565, A567, A5038 and A59. It is possible to reach the A59 Scotland Road from all these roads, after which the directions are the same as those from the exit of the Wallasey (Kingsway) Tunnel (see below).

From the Birkenhead (Queensway) Tunnel

The entrance to the tunnel is approached from the west by the A553 Conway Street, from the south-west by the A552 Borough Road and from the south by the A41 New Chester Road.

Once inside the tunnel, continue for approximately 1½ miles then, after a right-hand bend, take the spur-road on your left, signposted towards the docks. The tunnel emerges at traffic lights, joining the A5052 New Quay.

Follow this road for approximately one mile, during which time it becomes the A5036, under various names. You will pass the famous Royal Liver Building and the Albert Dock, both on your right. The road then bends to the left, away from the river, becoming the A562 Parliament Street.

Go through one set of lights and then through a major crossroads with the A5038/A561 crossing you. After this crossroads, the road extends up a steep hill, passing the huge Anglican Cathedral to your left. Turn right at the next crossroads onto the B5175 Princes Road.

Princes Road is a broad single carriageway for a few hundred metres, before dividing into a tree-lined boulevard. The synagogue is on your left, on the final corner before the boulevard begins. You can park in Selborne Street, which is a turning on the left, immediately after the synagogue.

Note: To return to the Wirral via the Birkenhead Tunnel, it is not possible to enter the tunnel through the spur at which you exited it. Retrace your route along the main dock road, passing the spur exit on your right. Follow the road round to the right, where it becomes the A5053 Leeds Street. Follow this to its conclusion, which is a large T-junction with the A59 Scotland Road. Turn right here, following signs for the Birkenhead Tunnel. After a few hundred metres, turn right at the small roundabout, into the tunnel.

From the Wallasey (Kingsway) Tunnel

The entrance to the tunnel is approached from the north-west and south by the A5027 Gorsey Lane and from the west as a direct extension of the M53 motorway.

As you emerge from the tunnel, follow the road straight on, avoiding the slip-road on the left. The road bends round sharply to the left, emerging onto the A59 Scotland Road, which is a major dual carriageway.

At the first crossroads, turn right onto the A5053 Leeds Street, signposted to the docks. Follow this road for about ¾ of a mile, then follow it round to the left, where it becomes the A5052 and A5036, under a variety of names.

Follow this road for approximately 1½ miles, passing the famous Royal Liver Building and the Albert Dock, both on your right.

Note: When retracing your route, once you turn left onto the A59 Scotland Road from the A5053 Leeds Street, take the slip road to your left almost immediately, which dips underneath the main road and becomes the tunnel approach.
